History of the Ranch

A view of the ranch from the street.

Rancho Paso Peruvians has been breeding, raising, training, and showing Peruvian horses since 1970. Lynne first became fascinated with this incomparable breed while living in Peru from 1969 to 1972. After riding hundreds of comfortable, exhilarating miles through rugged Andean terrain, meeting breeders, and attending shows,high-quality foundation horses were obtained and imported to continue breeding well-conformed, naturally smooth-gaited, intelligent, and beautiful Peruvian Pasos in the United States. In 1972 such notables as Res. Champion El Dorado De Chachani (sire of 2x Ch. of Champions La Nusta, 2x Champion Hola Lindo, and of the famous stallion Huaco Dorado, Dr. Ann Chess's first Peruvian Paso) and *Castano (U.S. National Champion at age 16). In 1976, a second trip was made to Peru to select and import 22 more foundation horses, including Reserve National Champion *Regia Del Cid and National Champion *Mi Recuerdo, providing two of the ranch's oldest and most important maternal lines. The ranch's two current stallions, RPP Casique Austral and Custodio de Oro DC, continue to sire excellent, award winning offspring.

After three years in Peru, fourteen years in California and then four years in Arkansas, Rancho Paso Peruvians is now settled comfortably in the heart of the Midwest. The ranch moved to Iowa in 1990 when Lynne began work at Iowa State University. A medium-sized breeding herd is maintained allowing lots of personal contact with each individual horse.

Trainers Steve Speck in Iowa and Kathy Russell in California have worked closly with Lynne over the years ensuring that each horse has had the best of handling. Derrick, Lynne's husband, helps with the overall operation and ably assists whenever he can.

The horses at Rancho Paso Peruvians are all good natured, well trained in the basics, and have always enjoyed top quality nutrition, hoof, and veterinary care. Their bloodlines are of the best. Rancho Paso Peruvians has won numerous national and regional Champion of Championships, Championships, Reserve Championships, as well as countless other awards and ribbons. Lynne has ridden her Peruvian horses on the most challenging of trails, up to 16,500 feet in the Andes, down by Death Valley, through the central Sierra Nevada range and down to the bottom of the Grand Canyon. Her Peruvians have also been ridden in many parades, featured in newspaper and magazine articles and been seen on television.
